Churches and rock monasteries

The Church of St. George is the oldest preserved Renaissance building in Kavarna. It was built in 1836, burnt down in 1877 during the uprising in the city. It was restored in the late 19th century, and a bell tower was erected. In the temple you can see precious, ancient icons. The magnificent wooden chancel screen was made in 2007.

The other church in Kavarna, which is worth seeing, is the Assumption of Mary. It was built in 1860 on the remains of another temple. Today you can see masterfully crafted icons and a splendid wood-carved bishop’s throne and pulpit.

Take some time and visit the Aladzha Monastery carved in the rocks. One of the few preserved rock monasteries, where you can see clearly see the separate rooms. It is part of the Golden Sands Nature Park. It is believed to have been created in the 12th century and was abandoned in the late 15th or early 16th century.
